How will you make this year the best year? Here are some ideas

January 8, 2018 By Kris

1. Focus on investing in yourself this year

How about before or as you invest your money, invest in yourself. It also doesn’t have to be strictly monetary but something that can enrich your soul. Learning a new skill, or reading that book you always put off. How about visiting a new place or perhaps meeting people outside of your usual circle? Or how about invest in your health by eating better and keeping active? Of all things you can do to make your year the best ever, nothing beats investing in yourself.

The best investment you can make is in yourself quote

2.  Be positive this year. One person that can make your dreams come true is you. If there is someone who can make your dream come true, how would you treat them? How would you speak to him/her? Be aware of negative self talk. Nip it in the bud and focus on turning any selftalk into positivity and encouraging pep talk. You will find yourself better off for it.

Talk to yourself like you would to someone you love. quote

3. If there are things you want do, Focus on GETTING STARTED. Things are scary mostly because your perception of what you do not know. Start and you will find fear is mostly never existed but in your mind. Most mistakes are not fatal and mistakes are necessary fuel to help you get you to your goal.

The scariest moment is always just before you start quote

4. You don’t have to do it all at once. Keep moving forward if needed, inch by inch. Small things add up to being big things. Set your goal and focus on each steps to get you there.

Sometimes the smallest step in the right direction ends up being the biggest step of your life. Tiptoe if you must, but take a step.

Don’t criticize. Check your self.

November 30, 2017 By Kris

Do you criticize?

All of us have been in a position to criticize or put down someone. Do we ever gain by doing such a thing? Doing so is a reflection of who we really are inside. More we put down and criticize, more we become negative and spiteful. It might make us feel better by putting others down but we need to be aware that the damage being done to our target is also damaging ourselves. It blinds us.

Below is a great story illustrating the perils of criticizing not realizing the issues were really within.

-Unknown Author

A businessman was highly critical of his competitors’ storefront windows. “Why, they are the dirtiest windows in town,” he claimed. Fellow business people grew tired of the man’s continual criticism and nitpicking comments about the windows. One day over coffee, the businessman carried the subject just too far.

Before leaving, a fellow store owner suggested the man get his own windows washed. He followed the advice, and the next day at coffee, he exclaimed, “I can’t believe it. As soon as I washed my windows, my competitor must have cleaned his too. You should see them shine.”

Story about merits of not giving up.

September 6, 2017 By Kris

Don’t give up. Success is usually just beyond your struggles.

A man meets a guru in the road. The man asks the guru, “Which way is success?”

The berobed, bearded sage speaks not but points to a place off in the distance.

The man, thrilled by the prospect of quick and easy success, rushes off in the appropriate direction. Suddenly, there comes a loud “Splat!!!”

Eventually, the man limps back, tattered and stunned, assuming he must have misinterpreted the message. He repeats his question to the guru, who again points silently in the same direction.

The man obediently walks off once more. This time the splat is deafening, and when the man crawls back, he is bloody, broken, tattered, and irate. “I asked you which way is success,” he screams at the guru. “I followed the direction you indicated. And all I got was splatted! No more of this pointing! Talk!”

Only then does the guru speak, and what he says is this: “Success is that way. Just a little after the splat.”

Inspirational story on Importance of forgiveness

August 15, 2017 By Kris

Forgiveness is good for our soul

Author Unknown

A teacher once told each of her students to bring a clear plastic bag and a sack of potatoes to school. For every person they refuse to forgive in their life’s experience, they chose a potato, wrote on it the name and date, and put it in the plastic bag. Some of their bags were quite heavy.

They were then told to carry this bag with them everywhere for one week, putting it beside their bed at night, on the car seat when driving, next to their desk at work.

The hassle of lugging this around with them made it clear what a weight they were carrying spiritually, and how they had to pay attention to it all the time to not forget and keep leaving it in embarrassing places. Naturally, the condition of the potatoes deteriorated to a nasty smelly slime. This was a great metaphor for the price we pay for keeping our pain and heavy negativity! Too often we think of forgiveness as a gift to the other person, and it clearly is for ourselves!

How do you handle criticism? Story of a famous violinist

July 21, 2017 By Kris

Criticism. How do we deal with it? It can be powerful when handled properly.

Story of a famous violinist:

How a person reacts to criticism often means the difference between success and failure. Take the case of Ole Bull, the famous Norwegian violinist of the past century.

His practical father, a chemist, sent him to the University of Christiania to study for the ministry and forbade him to play his beloved violin. He promptly flunked out and, defying his father, devoted all his time and energy to the violin. Unfortunately, though he had great ability, his teachers were relatively unskilled, so that by the time he was ready to start his concert tour he wasn’t prepared.

In Italy a Milan newspaper critic wrote: “He is an untrained musician. If he be a diamond, he is certainly in the rough and unpolished.”

There were two ways Ole Bull could have reacted to that criticism. He could have let it make him angry, or he could learn from it. Fortunately he chose the latter. He went to the newspaper office and asked to see the critic. The astounded editor introduced him. Ole spent the evening with the 70-year-old critic, asked about his faults, and sought the older man’s advice on how to correct them.

Then he canceled the rest of his tour, returned home, and spent the next six months studying under really able teachers. He practiced hours upon hours to overcome his faults. Finally, he returned to his concerts and, when only 26, became the sensation of Europe.

Challenges create greatness: Story of a cocoon and a butterfly

July 11, 2017 By Kris

Struggle is a necessary part of success

A man found a cocoon of a butterfly. One day a small opening appeared, he sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole.

Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could go no farther. Then the man decided to help the butterfly, so he took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily.

But it had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings. The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would contract in time.

Neither happened!

In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings.

It never was able to fly.

What the man in his kindness and haste did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening were God’s way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon.

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If God allowed us to go through our life without any obstacles, it would cripple us.

We would not be as strong as what we could have been.

And we could never fly.

The Nails in the Fence Story. A boy and a lesson from his father

June 16, 2017 By Kris

The Nails in the Fence

Author Unknown

There once was a little boy who had a bad temper. His Father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence. The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence.

Finally the day came when the boy didn’t lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper. The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence.

He said, ‘You’ve done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won’t matter how many times you say I’m sorry, the wound is still there and a verbal wound is just as bad as a physical one.’

The Story of a father’s unstoppable love for his son. Rick Hoyt’s story

June 9, 2017 By Kris

Truly inspirational story about a Father’s unstoppable love for his son

This is a story of Rick Hoyt who was born with Cerebral Palsy, who wanted to participate in a 5 mile benefit run. Rick’s father Dick Hoyt who was not an athlete by any means finished next to last but when Rick told him “Dad, when I am running, it feels like I am not handicapped.”, started a run (No pun intended) of over 1000 races completed encompassing marathons, triathlons and even 6 iron man competitions. They even ran across America in 1992 in 45 days.

More than the story of a loving father, this is a story of a family that refused to institutionalize his son despite being advised to do so. Despite the odds stacked against them, they believed that his son can live a normal life. Their dedication and belief resulted in their son attending public school at the age of 13, and ultimately graduated from Boston University in 1993 with a degree in Special Education.

Dick and Rick Hoyt now lead The Hoyt Foundation focused on building individual character, self confidence and self esteem in disabled young people.

What an amazing story and it goes to show love of a father and of family can transcend anything.

Happy upcoming Father’s day!

Inspirational Story of Weakness or Strength

May 16, 2017 By Kris

Your weakness is weak only because you make it.

Sometimes our biggest weakness can become our biggest strength. Take, for example, the story of one 10-year-old boy who decided to study Judo despite the fact that he had lost his left arm in a devastating car accident.

The boy began lessons with an old Japanese Judo master. The boy was doing well, so he couldn’t understand why, after three months of training the master had taught him only one move.

“Sensei,” the boy finally said, “Shouldn’t I be learning more moves?”

“This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you’ll ever need to know.” – the sensei replied.

Not quite understanding, but believing in his teacher, the boy kept training.

Several months later, the sensei took the boy to his first tournament. Surprising himself, the boy easily won his first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, his opponent became impatient and charged; the boy deftly used his one move to win the match. Still amazed by his success, the boy was now in the finals.

This time, his opponent was bigger, stronger, and more experienced. For a while, the boy appeared to be overmatched. Concerned that the boy might get hurt, the referee called a time-out. He was about to stop the match when the sensei intervened.

“No,” the sensei insisted, “Let him continue.”

Soon after the match resumed, his opponent made a critical mistake: he dropped his guard. Instantly, the boy used his move to pin him. The boy had won the match and the tournament. He was the champion.

On the way home, the boy and sensei reviewed every move in each and every match. Then the boy summoned the courage to ask what was really on his mind.

“Sensei, how did I win the tournament with only one move?”

“You won for two reasons,” the sensei answered. “First, you’ve almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in all of judo. And second, the only known defense for that move is for your opponent to grap your left arm.”

The boy’s biggest weakness had become his biggest strength.
